Description
In a recent report published by the U.S. Department of Education (2006), concern exists that the quality of student learning at U.S. colleges and universities is inadequate and, in some cases, declining. It was found that the results of scholarly research on teaching and learning are rarely translated into practice, especially for those working in fields such as teacher preparation. The U.S. Department of Education recommends that colleges and universities embrace a culture of continuous innovation and quality improvement by developing new pedagogies, curricula, and technologies to improve learning. Education professionals can begin to address this recommendation if they intentionally choose to reflect on their practice(s). To confirm the importance of reflection, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) (1997-2008) commented on the notion of reflection by stating (see Standard 5 of the Unit Assessments), that faculty should "reflect on their own practice" (http://www.ncate.org/documents/standards/UnitStandardsMay07.pdf).
